For several centuries people have been gathering at Congo Square in New Orleans to play music, dance, and celebrate their culture. The ancestry tree (pictured above) serves as a reminder that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Our culture is the connection with those who came before us, and those who will come in the future. Despite all the turmoil and uncertainty of our present, the ancestry tree serves as a reminder that we are not alone, and have a responsibility to continue to celebrate and honor our culture.

My home is located in the homeland of the Wabanaki, the People of the Dawn. I join in recognizing and honoring the Abenaki, Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot Nations, and all of the Native communities who have nurtured and celebrated the land for hundreds of generations in what is known today as Maine.

However, acknowledgement is not enough. Reparations are due. One percent of all financial transactions for David Greenham Consulting will be donated to a worthy Indigenous program.
